Statement written sula water protection as a public good

Parliament

- having regard to Article 123 of its Rules

A . Whereas the United Nations recognized the universal human right to water and sanitation (United Nations General Assembly resolution A/64/L.63/Rev.1)

B . Whereas many European citizens have no right to water as a "common good of humanity" (EP resolution P6_TA (2006) 0087) because of its privatization and commercialization,

C. Whereas privatization has created inequalities and exclusions, and has often led to rises in the price of water, excessive water losses, the suspension of water services management and irresponsible, so that, in some cases, it was returned to the management public services,

1. reiterates that "the management of water resources should not be subject to the rules of the internal market" (the EP resolution P5_TA (2004) 0183);

2. Calls on the EU institutions and Member States to make every effort to ensure that the right to water and health services is universal, inclusive;

3 . Urges the Commission to revise the relevant legislation, particularly that relating to public contracts and concessions in order to ensure that ownership and management of water and water services remain public;

4. Instructs its President to forward this declaration, together with the names of the signatories, the EU institutions, governments and parliaments of the Member States.
